Dr. Kahn-John has worked as a psychiatric nurse practitioner and as a health administrator within the Indian Health Services in the Southwest and in Alaska for most of her 23 year nursing career. Her expertise as an advanced practice psychiatric and geriatric clinician lends to her comfort and joy in teaching in the Doctor of Nursing Practice-Psychiatric Specialty Program at the University of Arizona-College of Nursing. Her research explores outcomes of spirituality, ceremony, and the presence of American Indian cultural wisdom on the physical and psychological health of American Indians, specifically the Diné (Navajo) in the Southwest region of the United States. Dr. Kahn-John plans to develop a culturally congruent, strength based measure of ‘resilience’ for American Indians based on the tenets of a model she developed, the Hózhó Resilience Model. Her current research validates the significance of cultural wisdom and ceremony as a mechanism for health and wellbeing in American Indian
communities and facilitates the development of culturally congruent health care in American Indian communities.
