Description
beads, wax, fiber mould
measures approximately 7" high
This Wixarika Huihcol beaded sculpture of a wolf is intricately adorned with images of hikuri, the peyote plant sacred to their lineage and spiritual practices, deer, and other sacred symbols. Made in the San Luis Potosi region of Mexico, in Real de Catorce, a mountain town above Wirrikuta, the Peyote Gardens, this piece is unique and made by hand pressing individual beads on to a wax covered mould.
The Indigenous Mexican Wixarika Huichol artists work collaboratively as a family and Benigno Carrillo Bautista, his wife, Margarita Carrillo Reza, and his brother Angel Carrillo Carrillo. They create intricate art pieces using traditional Wixarika symbols and allies. Representations of sacred objects, ceremonies, and the Wixarika cosmovision are depicted in these traditional artworks.
