Real de Catorce Project, Mexico
A meeting was held in Zacatecas City with the National Institute of Anthropology in Mexico (INA), together with a group of 14 Wixaritari leaders and Maracames who are involved in the defense of Huiricuta and other sacred sites. This was an essential meeting to update and revise with the Wixaritari the progress of the UNESCO nomination and the findings of the Rapid Risk Assessment and have their continued input and direction regarding the steps needed to move forward. CSEE helped sponsor the group of Wixaritari leaders to travel from their homes to the meetings, covering their costs of travel, accomodation and food throughout the course of these meetings.
The Real de Catorce project is attending meetings in Mexico City the week of July 10. CSEE is excited to support representatives of the Wixaritari community to advise on the Aquila Interpretation Center, both in how they wish to have their story of the land told, and to consult on the needs of the Wixaritari people and how this center can best be used to support them as a people. The Real de Catorce Project plans to host 3 Wixaritari (preferably a man, woman, and youth) who will be selected to represent their community to travel to Mexico City and join in the meetings.
