The Center for Shamanic Education and Exchange was delighted to share over 100 pieces of Indigenous artwork from some of our project partner communities through an art show at ArtUs Co in Austin, Texas.
This event included Peruvian Shipibo textiles, gama bags from Colombia, and Wixarika Huichol art woks from Mexico.
Featured at the shoe were Wixarika Huichol yarn paintings and bead work from artists Benigno Carrillo Bautista, his wife Margarita Carrillo Reza, brother Angel Carrillo Carrillo, and their family. Learn more about them here.
The Center has partnered with these artists to offer a limited number of custom fine art quality prints of their work, which you can view and order here.
Included in the show were eight gamá (mochila) bags, which were made by Kogi holy women and gifted to the Center in gratitude for our support of the Kogi spiritual midwifery project.
These bags are entirely handmade, have never been touched by machine or money, and are woven over one moon cycle with great intention and prayer.
We are very grateful to hold and connect with these sacred items. Learn more about Kogi people and about the gama mochila in this article co-authored by a Kogi mama spiritual leader.
Many of the pieces in the show were from the Flores family and the Shipibo-Conibo community of San Francisco, in the Ucayali region ofPeru, near Yarinacocha. These colorful, intricate embroidered cloths hold the healing vibration of icaro songs along with their healing properties that bring in connection with helping spirits and support health, love, success, happiness, and more.
Learn more about these kene cloths here and visit our show to purchase them. https://shamaniceducation.org/shop/
These unique pieces are not only a visual joy to experience in person, but they also invite a deeper connection to the culture and wisdoms held by these communities and people. We are interested in collaborating on more art events in other cities. If you have connections with galleries and other cultural venues, please reach out to us to explore this possibility at shamaniceducation@gmail.com!
And save the date! We are planning another art show in Austin, October 4th thorough 27th.
Join us in our work to nourish the spiritual roots of humanity and to perpetuate Indigenous traditions worldwide both through direct contributions here and via purchases in our online store.
