The Huichol Pilgrimage Temple Project
In 2017, we offered a grant to to support the restoration of a Huichol temple complex called Queaehruitea.
Queaehruitea, or "Las Latas" as it is named in Spanish, is one of the four ceremonial centers in the Huichol community of Tuapurie, which is recognized officially as Comunidad de Santa Catarina Cuexcomatitlán, located at the north of the State of Jalisco in the municipality of Mezquitic.
In collaboration with Mexican nonprofit Humana AC, the Center for Shamanic Education and Exchange is currently funding the first stage of the process including an architectural survey of the buildings, assessement of the repair needs and procedure and projected cost.
Totupica Candelario Robles, Tuapurie community leader and Humberto Fernández Borja, Humana director say:
“This will be an extremely useful project to support the Huichol cultural survival and the shamans' education in Queaehruitea and serves as a valuable model to follow for the rest of the ceremonial centers in the rest of the Huichol Sierra.”
